'all the stars'.... the hit that keeps on hitting

This post is about my hit dance song, all the stars.

When my Billboard hit song, in a song, was riding high I started work on the next project. I have been recording an album for a few years now, but as you are all learning my original songs are not dance floor ready, so i didn’t have a follow up song. I had to write a new one - quick. I didn’t want anyone to forget about me. In all honesty all the stars is not one of my favorite songs. The lyrics are so-so and if I had my choice I would go back and change some (which I did for the album version - actually, the album version is a complete re-work). Abe Seiferth, my producer, and I pulled it together in the studio, but we kept having to change it to fit our liking. Hmmm…. So we punched an original out, which is a dance tune.

all the stars made the rounds and was remixed by several top-notch DJs like Tim Letteer, who had sent in a song to Billboard, and Nick Harvey. I also did some searching of my own on myspace.com for other DJs. I found this amazing duo that I have big dreams of producing a few songs with in the future called DJs from Mars. They are out of Italy. I was so impressed with the fun they seemed to be having with their music, and I also heard this “ease” it seems they have with recreating a song. They did a club remix and a radio length mix of all the stars; this is the way this song should’ve sounded in the first place. They knew exactly what to do with it. I ended up using the their mix as the main release and made a music video to it: http://www.vimeo.com/7384858. all the stars was played on dancefloors all over the world. The song went top ten on many music store sites, DJ lists… and in some cases to number one. The DJs from Mars remix has been out for over a year and it still gets about 20 hits a day on my website. The video was created, and directed by B.A. Miale. I had showed her that I wanted something fairly simple, and referred to her to Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough, but B.A. flipped the idea, so instead of putting me in front of a blue screen she wanted me dressed and painted in white with a white background, and she would cast images onto me. It’s colorful, and trippy and is on tons of “coolest videos on the internet” sites. It’s a simple disco video just turned inside out. Though the lyrics do tell a story. all the stars is my response to astrology and other metaphysical ideas of predicting the future for someone else. It’s not that I don’t reference astrology from time to time, but how dare something or someone put me in a box and say that I’m this way or that way. Telling me things that I shouldn’t try or try to accomplish. I know from the years I’ve been on this earth that you can achieve anything you want to if you are persistent/consistent. I believe in an invisible force. You know, when you are called toward something? You feel a peace inside you. This song is not about anyone. It’s a protest of anything trying to keep us trapped in these limitations of who we can be. Only when you believe in something do you give it power.

Oh my bee! I can’t believe it! It’s been 6 years since I went to Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to tell them of my idea for an adult spelling bee. We are going into our 12th season on August 16th, 2010 with Jennifer Dziura calling words, and me on bells.

This story has been told many times, but not on one of my websites. For those of you that don’t know: I went to the movies to see the documentary, Spellbound. I was so blown away. It was like a combination of a documentary, and American Idol (which I am a fan of), though more intense, and more entertaining, and it left you rooting for all those kids. I’ve always been nuts for game shows too and have always enjoyed the excitement from the contestants. It’s the one time you are allowed to be dramatically ecstatic, and it just seems so fun to be that excited. Anyway, since I was already an entertainer I thought of doing my own spelling bee, but done in cabaret style. I had heard of this bar that had a very successful quiz night, and BINGO. I went over one night for a little BINGO. When I got there I took a look around and saw their awesome performance space, it was designed like a train car. I sat at the bar with my friend Babak and as we were playing BINGO we were talking to the bartender, Holly, who happened to be the manager as well. I lightly mentioned that I’d like to put on an adult spelling bee. Holly’s mouth dropped to the floor and said “if you don’t host it we are going to have to steal this idea from you”. I was surprised because all the while I’ve been thinking about how to put this together, and would people actually be interested? The owner of the bar, Andy McDowell, was also just as excited to piece this together with me. We brain-stormed, and we held the first Spelling Bee, September 20th, 2004.

I had asked Babak to co-host with me as the word caller. I think Babak thought it was going to be a bunch of people getting drunk trying to spell. I was hoping for something a little more competitive. Boy, was Babak wrong. People came, and they were serious. They were vicious. The one thing you never want to do is hold a spelling bee and not be able to pronounce the words with a bunch of smarties in the room. The whole night was a rocky start, but we made it down to the final two contestants: Jonanthan Lil, and a budding spelling starlet named Jennifer Dziura. At this point Babak had kinda had it with calling words so I had taken over and gave Jennifer the word, ‘axolotl’ and she missed it, and as I was about to give Jonathan his final word Babak blurted out the word ‘bereavement’, which was in no way the same level of difficulty. Needless to say, Jonathan won. Although we had all notice the stage presence of Jennifer. She was funny and obviously smart. After all the pressure from the audience Babak had told me at the end of the night that he could never do the spelling bee again. Babak isn’t a regular performer. I knew by the look in his eyes that he was firm on his answer. So we asked Jennifer to co-host with me and call the words. I think in some way this was Jennifer’s destiny. So that’s how we got started. It seems like it was yesterday that all that took place. Here we are hundreds of spelling bees later, many articles written about our game from The New York Times to airline magazines, and listed in the top ten things to do while in NYC. I am proud. I am the mayor of Williamsburg.

the story of 'in a song', my BILLBOARD hit.

in a song was written years ago about a guy I was seeing while living in Seattle. It seemed all he was comfortable doing was “getting it on”. I knew there was more inside him than his constant need for sex. He was funny, and performed well at his day job (I love a hard worker). He had a pride. He still does. We never ended up together in a love relationship, but we did end up best friends for years. Eric Fassett is still to this day a horn dog…. grrrrr.

At the time I was just starting to perform at this underground late night show called Isabella Pack-a-weenie’s Late Night Cabaret. It was held at the legendary cafe on Olive street Coffee Messiah. I made great friends with “Isabella”, herself, also known as Peter Palermo, then renamed PINN. Peter/PINN showed a great interest in returning to music so we decided to start a band called bobbyPINN. It was just him on acoustic guitar, and me on vocals. We would smoke pot frequently and on occasion do ecstasy. Our friends would go dancing, and Peter, and I would just go back to our music space, and play, talk, and write. I had written in a song before we started playing together, then one day I brought it to Peter, and we added it to our set. Years past, and we had stopped playing together, but I held onto that song knowing it had something.

Once I got to New York City I started a band called , …y las flores. We were a trio that performed old Mexican, and Country songs. We were doing great before I went on this soul-searching mission to Costa Rica, and when I returned I felt I needed to do my own thing. Again, I pulled out in a song, but instead of searching for help on instrumentation for the song I got my guitar out, re-wrote some of the lyrics, and made up a guitar riff. I asked for help from my, then, downstairs neighbor, Abe Seiferth, to produce it. His apartment was his studio, and he had some good equipment. He had recorded …y las flores. I played in a song for Abe, and he loved it. We made the recording with my vocal, and guitar then he added instruments through the Logic recording tools. The song sounded great, but I thought it needed a dance remix. I found DJ Puritain, on MySpace to make a mix, and before you know it I got an email from Michael Hades. Michael was just starting a dance label in NYC, and he wanted to release this single, and get more remixes made. After a few were done we sent it out, and pimped it around. Once I thought it was time to move on and work on a new release, we found a young DJ named Tim Letteer aka TRL. He did a remix of in a song that placed me at #15 on Billboards dance chart. It stayed on the charts for 13 weeks.

The song seems to have held up well over the past couple of years. It’s still get played. People still buy it, and the video is hot. The video (scroll down to watch) was a re-living of my childhood. I was an outcast, and never had many friends, or maybe I just wasn’t interested in other people. I loved to sing, and dance in front of my mirror when I was a kid. I always thought that was where some of the best performances of my whole life took place. I just wanted something fun, and heartfelt for the video. I asked a few of my friends, Jennifer Norton, Elizabeth Webb, & Laverne Cox to be in the video knowing that they had also spent many musical memories in front of their mirrors. I had found video director, Bryce Prevatte, simply by answering an add on Craigslist. We were instantly on the same page about what we wanted. I think it’s hot. I think it’s a breakthrough video. You can see how sincere we all are, and Bryce is an amazing editor.

Of coarse, there are many people to thank. I’m very proud. This is the beginning of my true body of work.

introduction to bobby blue

Hello, my name is bobby blue. When most people hear me sing they think I am a woman. I am a counter-tenor, and have 4 octaves. I make music because it’s always been a companion through my life. It just seems like a natural thing for me to do. I’m the type that can just get lost in a song. I never knew how to describe the wonderment of closing your eyes, and feeling the ride of the music, until one day when I heard someone call it “my K-hole”. I’ve never done the drug Special K, but I can imagine that it’s a perfect description.

I don’t know, I’ve always imagined living my life in a music video. I’m the worst/best with my ipod. When I walk down the street, and the right song comes on I feel like I’m on a runway. (Who cares… you only live once, and even if there is re-incarnation it’s not like you’ll actually remember anything. Live it up.) I’m also a good singer so I thought that I would create what I’ve always imagined. I go from singing Country, Mariachi, Norteño, French, Disco or whatever I think complements my vocals, or what is fun to sing. I love beautiful songs, and hope I write them too. I play guitar, but all of my recordings include much more instrumentation all added through Logic. The genre ends up being somewhere between Folk, Electronic, Acoustic, & Pop. I am a counter tenor, and so along with my original songs I have found a few big vocal songs from Mexico that are fun to sing, and they always go over really well with a live audience. A little selfish, I guess. I like applause, (is that bad to say?), I love being in the studio, I love making music videos. I haven’t been performing live lately. I guess I haven’t been inspired, but I do have a new single coming out called go, which I will be pushing like crazy in the coming weeks.

Also, in September 2004 I created an adult spelling bee called The Williamsburg Spelling Bee in Brooklyn, NY. We have been featured in publications, radio, and television across the world. My co-host, word-caller is comedian, Jennifer Dziura. We are about to start a new season of the spelling bee on August 16th, 2010 and every other Monday night thereafter.

Looking forward to continuing this blog, and introducing you all to my music, and sharing the journey that takes me from song to song. I’ll start you out with this first music video, in a song. In the coming days I will tell the story of this Billboard charting song. Enjoy.
